Transboundary Ecoregion Julian Alps
In 2009 the Triglav National Park and the Regional Nature Park of the Julian Prealps Park received a Transboundary Charter by the The Europarc Federation. The Transboundary Ecoregion Julian Alps is the official name of the territory involved, including the two parks but also the area of the Slovenian MAB Unesco Julian Alps.
The certification confirms the close collaboration between the two companies confirms the goodness of the common work done to date that has affected many areas of intervention. Currently contacts and meetings between the staffs of the two parks have involved almost daily basis. The recognition is based on a desire to overcome, as well as for nature, the administrative boundaries, especially along the border, which for centuries has been the site of closures and conflicts. This event created a strong signal to try to combine with concrete acts environment, peace and sustainable development.
In 2014 the parks also received the certificate of the Alpine Convention for a transboundary pilot region for eco-connectivity.
Publication JULIAN ALPS TRANSBOUNDARY ECOREGION - The green heart of Europe without borders
At the end of 2016 the Transboundary Ecoregion Julian Alps was certified with the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism. The Charter is both an important recognition of the work done and a model of governance that delivers Protected Areas as sustainable tourism destinations. In 2020 the Charter for Sustainable Development and the Certificate for Cross-Border Cooperation were successfully extended until 2024.
For the Ecoregion the goals of this governance are:
- strengthen cooperation with local tourist organisations and providers working in the area
- create a network of information sites in all the Ecoregion to properly inform the visitors about the special qualities of the area
- protect and enhance the area’s natural and cultural heritage, for and through tourism,
- and to protect it from excessive tourism development promote sports activities in the nature, which don’t affect natural and cultural heritage
Transboundary Ecoregion Julian Alps has adopted the vision and action plan.
Nature Without Borders!
The Triglav National Park and Julian Prealps Natural Park have launched a new short documentary within the common project NAT2CARE to present Transboundary Ekoregion Julian Alps. The main topic of the documentary is the same as the topic of the project which is the protection and preservation of European important species in both countries. The film stresses out that there is no formal border in nature. High quality photographs and visually sophisticated recordings are accompanied by local music and folk songs, showing the characteristics of the entire Julian Alps from geology, water, wildlife and vegetation, Natura 2000 sites and species to traditional human activities which have marked the area. The main message of the documentary is to respect nature in all its diversity, and to protect and preserve it for future generations.
